So, the new Transformers figures came out today! I had some intel that there was supposed to be a "preview wave" two weeks ago, and I actually set out that day as well, which disappointed me to no end.
But sure enough, they're here now! And they're awesome. I got an Optimus Prime and a Starscream, and unboxed just the Prime. It's amazing how many moving parts he has, and how many pegs there are on this guy. The movie accuracy is, astonishingly, spot on, and considering all the crap that goes into the cg models in the movie, that is just amazing. I'd take a couple pics of the guy, but he's at home right now, and I'm in Evanston.
I'm kind of disappointed that Soundwave was nowhere to be seen. I was really, really excited to get this guy for a ton of reasons, 1) the original voice actor who voiced him in the 80s will be voicing him in the movie! 2) This guy has a third mode, and he turns into a SATELLITE! 3) Not only that, he shoots out a symbiotic projectile, which turns into a cyclops panther! Not only is this SUCH a nod to the original cartoon, it is awesome.
Anyways, the other day I said I borrowed two DVDs last weekend. Here's the second one.
Barbarella, Queen of the Galaxy was a late 60s/early 70s sci-fi film. Think about hippies, think about camp, think about sexual liberation, all combo-ed with SF.
And you know what? I don't really get it. I mean, this is supposed to be the film that launched Jane Fonda to stardom, leading her to do stuff for women's rights, but, well, I don't see it. Barbarella does stuff, and it's occasionally exciting, but it doesn't mean all that much. You look at the trailer, and you'd think the camp would be pretty good, but throughout the movie, it's actually pretty weak.
Also, it's not exactly kosher to watch a movie that begins with a microgravity striptease, while your roommate's trying to do homework in the same room. Maybe that's why I didn't get it.
. . . Well, at least Jane Fonda's reasonably pretty.
